Creating and managing pages

A page is one address on your website. It uses a template for its frame and adds its own content, its own URL and its own search-engine details.

The screen lists them per folder, with their location, the template they use and when they were last changed.

WhereManage → Pages
Takes effectAfter you publish (how)

A page can only exist in a language its template already exists in. That's why the template dropdown can be empty or short when you add a page. Work in this order: language first, then template, then page. See Templates and pages.

Adding a page

Press Add page at the top right and fill in:

FieldNotes
LanguageOnly on multi-language sites
TemplateOnly base templates that exist in the language you picked are listed
NameWhat you'll see in the builder and in menus
LocationThe URL. It fills itself in from the name as you type, overwrite it if you want something shorter
FolderWhere it sits in this list. Optional
Requires logged in userOnly when the members module is on. See Members-only pages below

The page is created empty, on the template you chose, and opens in the editor when you click its name.

Your home page is the page whose Location is blank. There's no separate setting for it. If the site ever reports that no home page was found, that's what it means: no page has an empty URL.

Folders are for you, not for visitors

A folder groups pages in this screen and nothing more. It does not become part of the URL. A page in the folder Services with the location roof-repair is still at /roof-repair.

Use folders freely on a big site; nothing about the website changes when you move a page between them.

Renaming, moving and changing a URL

The ⋮ menu on a page row has everything:

ActionWhat it does
Edit page name & URLName, location, folder and the members-only toggle
Edit metadataMeta title, description and share image, see Meta title, description and share image
Page in new languageAdds a language variant of this page
Delete pageRemoves it. There is no undo

Changing a URL does not leave a forwarding address. The old address starts returning your 404 page immediately, and any link to it (from Google, from someone else's website, from a printed flyer) is broken. If the page has been live for a while, add a redirect from the old URL to the new one under Manage → Settings → URL redirects in the same sitting.

Renaming a page in the builder is safe on its own. It's the Location field that carries this risk.

The same page in another language

Choose Page in new language from the ⋮ menu, pick the language and give the page its name and URL in that language.

The language list here is narrower than your site's language list: it shows only the languages the page's template exists in, minus the ones this page already has. If it comes up empty, you've either covered every language already, or the template needs that language first.

Language variants of one page appear together on one row in the list, each with its own flag, so you can see at a glance which pages are missing a translation.

Members-only pages

Switching on Requires logged in user means visitors who aren't logged in get your 401 page instead of the content. Two things to do with it:

  • Set that 401 page under Manage → Settings → Website settings, or people get nothing useful.
  • Restricted pages are left out of sitemap.xml, so you're not inviting search engines to index something they can't reach.

This is page-level protection for the page's own content, not a vault. Don't put anything you'd be harmed by leaking behind it.

Common issues

The template dropdown is empty when I add a page.

No template exists in the language you selected. Add the language variant to the template first.

My new page gives a 404 on the live site.

Publish. New pages, like everything else, arrive with a publish snapshot. See Saving, previewing and publishing.

I changed the URL and now Google's link is broken.

Expected. Add a redirect under Manage → Settings → URL redirects.

The page doesn't show up in my menu.

Pages aren't added to menus automatically. See Building a menu.

I can't find the page I just made.

Check the folder you put it in, and the language flag. A Dutch page sits on the same row as its English twin.
