Writing and publishing an article
Once your blog is set up, writing is a two-part job: fill in the article's details, then write its content in an editor much like the page editor.
| Where | Modules → Publications, then the category the article belongs to |
|---|---|
| Takes effect | As soon as you save |
| Needs | A blog set up once (how) |
Articles go live the moment you save them. They're not part of a publish snapshot: the blog pages you built are, but the articles themselves are read fresh on every visit. So the setup gets published once, and after that a new article is public as soon as it's saved and switched on.
Create the article
Open the category and press Add publication. You'll be asked for:
| Field | What it's for |
|---|---|
| Title | The article's name, used as the heading and in its web address |
| Summary | The line under the title in the overview, and the description Google shows under your link. Write a real sentence |
| Image | The thumbnail in the overview, and the preview picture when the article is shared. From your media library |
| Start date (optional) | Nothing before this date and time; leave empty to publish now |
| End date (optional) | Nothing after it; leave empty to leave it up |
Press Create. The article appears in the category list with an Active badge.
Note what you're not asked for: category and language. Both come from the category you're standing in, so create the category first.
Scheduling and taking articles down
The two dates are the publish window:
- Write now, publish Monday: set a start date. The article stays invisible until then, with no further action from you.
- A campaign that ends: set an end date and it retires itself.
- Take it down now: the
⋮menu on the article has Deactivate. The badge flips to Disabled and the article disappears from the site immediately. Activate brings it back.
Deactivating is the one to reach for when something's wrong with a live article: it's instant, and nothing is lost.
Write the content
Click the article's title to open the content editor. The left side is your article; the right column has four tabs:
| Tab | What it's for |
|---|---|
| Text editor | Writing and formatting, the same editor as on a page |
| Component selector | Adding elements: rows and columns, text, images, buttons, sliders |
| Display settings | Attaching a display set to the selected element |
| Component list | The properties of the selected element |
Then press Save changes. Leaving the page with unsaved work prompts you first, but don't rely on it. Save as you go.
Two differences from the page editor:
- The article's title, summary, image and dates are not edited here. They're in the
⋮menu's Edit on the category screen, which reopens the dialog from before. - The Display settings tab in this editor only attaches display sets. The per-element styling panel isn't part of it. Style articles through the display sets on the article's elements, and through the publication container on the article page. See Display sets.
Author and date
Both come from ClickWhale, not from you: the author is the account that created the article, and the date is when it was created.
They only appear if the Publication container on your article page has Show author and Show publication date switched on, and in the overview, the date shows as "3 days ago" rather than a full date. See Adding a blog to your website.
Renaming an article
You can, but the web address is built from the title, so an article you rename gets a new address and the old one stops working. If the article has already been shared or linked, either leave the title alone or set up a redirect from the old address under Manage → Settings → URL redirects.
Common issues
My article isn't on the website.

In order: is it Active? Has its start date passed? Is its end date in the past? Is it in the category your list element points at, in the right language?
The overview shows it but clicking does nothing.

That's the blog setup, not the article: the list element's Article page property isn't set. See Adding a blog to your website.
I saved the content and the article page is empty.

Check you pressed Save changes in the article editor. The tick inside the text editor only commits your text to the element; it doesn't save the article.
The RSS feed doesn't have my new article yet.

I changed the article and the site still shows the old text.

Articles are live, so this is almost always your browser. Try a private window, then "I changed it and the website didn't change".
