Members

The members module gives people a login for your website. It's how you put a page behind a door: a price list for dealers, a members' area for a club, documents for a committee.

WhereModules → Members
NeedsThe members module switched on

Turn the module on first. Manage → Settings → Enabled modules → Enable members module, then save. Until you do, there's no Members component in the editor and no Requires logged in user setting on a page.

What a member login is for

A page marked as restricted is visible to anyone who is logged in. That's the whole rule. Every member sees every restricted page.

So members work well for one protected area, such as a dealer section, a members' area or a document library, and not for "the board sees these pages and ordinary members see those". If you need two levels, you need two websites, or you need to keep the second level out of the website altogether.

Adding a member

Member overview → add member, top right. Four fields:

FieldNotes
EmailWhat they log in with.
PasswordSet it once, here.
NameA short name, shown in the overview and in "Welcome …" after they log in.
Full nameTheir full name, for your own records.

Choose the password carefully. You can't change it later. The edit dialog has no password field: once a member exists, only that member can change their own password, from the login block on your site. Send it to them by a route you trust, and don't reuse one.

The overview lists members with their email and the date they were last active, which is the quickest way to spot accounts nobody uses. Click a name to see the member's details.

Deleting a member stops them logging in. A member who is logged in at that moment keeps access until their session ends, 30 minutes after their last visit to a page.

Passwords

  • Set a strong one when you create the member. Nothing checks it at this end. When the member later changes it themselves, the site requires at least eight characters with a lower-case letter, a capital and a digit. Hold yourself to the same standard.
  • Tell them how to change it. Once logged in, the login block on your site offers Wachtwoord wijzigen (change password).
  • If someone is locked out, the reliable fix is to delete the member and add them again with a new password. The Wachtwoord vergeten? (forgot password) link on the login block does not currently deliver a working reset.

Common issues

There's no Members section under Modules.

The members module is off. Manage → Settings → Enabled modules → Enable members module, save, reload.

I can't set a password when editing a member.

That's correct. There's no password field on the edit dialog. Delete and re-add the member to give them a new one.

A member can see a page I only wanted the board to see.

Every logged-in member sees every restricted page. Keep that page's content out of the website, or put it on a second site.

I deleted a member, but they can still see the restricted pages.

They were logged in when you deleted them. Their access ends 30 minutes after their last page visit, and they can't log in again.

I deleted a member by mistake.

Add them again with the same email address. Their old login is gone; a new one works the same way.
